We can bet some Arsenal fans have never seen live images of their club celebrate a league title, the only times they have been able to watch Arsenal lift a league title is when Premier League classics is showing on television. Rubbing salt on injury, North London rivals – Tottenham will finish above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years this season, the first time many Arsenal fans will be seeing this happen. Many Arsenal fans have written UME (the one they call UTME now) like five times, went to the university, had extra year, graduated went for NYSC, got married, given birth and are on the verge of having grand-children since the last time Arsenal won the Premier league. We examine some of the things that has happened in that time.
D’Banj started his musical career, sang Run down and then later ‘ran down’
You all remember D’banj tell them the koko, I say make you tell them the koko… The last time Arsenal won the league, we did not even know who D’Banj was, he was still hustling on the streets of London with Don Jazzy. Since then, he has dropped hit-tracks – Tongolo, Why me?, Scapegoat etc., left Mo’Hits and then returned to singing nursery rhymes, who knows ‘ewa na beans o..e…’
Movies like ‘aki na ukwa’ and ‘Usuofia in London’ were in vogue
Nowadays, movies like The Wedding Party, 76, Phone Swap, 30 days in Atlanta etc are enjoying rave review. The last time Arsenal won the league, those sort of movies were the dream. The movies in vogue were ‘Aki na Ukwa’ – that brought Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze to limelight, Usuofia in London was also reigning. Since then, the ‘boys’ – Aki and Pawpaw have grown in status and horizontal ‘stature’.
NFA was still begging Obafemi Martins to play for Nigeria
Obafemi Martins was yet to make his debut for Nigeria when Arsenal last won the Premier league. Since then, Martins has played for the Super Eagles after years of turning down invitations and all but retire. He was at Inter Milan at the time, he has since played for Newcastle, Wolfsburg, Rubin Kazhan, Birmingham City, Levante, Seattle Sounders and presently at Shanghai Shenhua. He has gone from being a youngster to a veteran in that time.
The Dollar still exchanged for between N132 and N136
The Naira still exchanged officially for between 132 and 136 dollars the last time Arsenal fans celebrated a league title, in that time the exchange rate has risen and a dollar now goes for around N305 officially. A liter of fuel was sold for N42 but now goes for N145. Five Naira could still buy some things then but it is now as useless as the ‘P’ in Psychology.
Nokia 3310 was still in vogue
If you had Nokia 3310 or Motorola T10 then, you were a big boy. You were probably the guy all the girls on your street and in your class wanted to mingle with. There was even no Facebook and Twitter that time, meaning there was no social media for Arsenal fans to discuss about winning the league title.
Our thoughts are with Arsenal fans all over the World. Better days ahead.
