While someone was comparing and contrasting different kinds of Jollof rice, we were busy examining and comparing footballers across major leagues in Europe. Using a 4-3-3 formation, here’s our team of the week.
Goalkeeper – Tom Heaton
Goalies like Claudio Bravo should sit down and watch the highlights of Heaton’s performance against Crystal Palace. Absolutely phenomenal.
Left Back – Marcelo
There’s always an intoxicating joy that comes to the fore each time the Brazilian dazzles with the ball down the left flank for Real Madrid. He dazzled once again for the Madridistas and proved that Sergio ‘Terry G’ Ramos isn’t the only player that can score late goals.
Centre Back – Michael Keane
Christian who? Keane was utterly dominant against the £30 million man – Benteke. He won countless headers in both penalty areas. It’s only a matter of time before Keane leaves the Turf Moor.
Centre Back – Paul Baysse
He frustrated the life out of the Parisien’s attack. And he was one of the reasons why OGC Nice weren’t nice on PSG.
Right Back – Kieran Trippier
He was selected in preference to England international – Kyle Walker, at right back. Trippier appeared to be more than a capable replacement and he put forth a disciplined display against namesake – Kieran Gibbs and Alexis ‘Runaway’ Sanchez.
Midfielder – Emre Can
He scored one of the best Liverpool goals you’re likely to see this season, or any season. How does a player deliver a ‘Man of the match’ performance? It’s simple, with one of the cleanest, well executed, expertly taken overhead kicks you’ll ever see. That’s how.
Midfielder – Gylfi Sigurdsson
Which player deserves a statue of Liberty at the Liberty stadium? It’s the one and only Gylfi Sigurdsson. But for the Icelandic midfielder this season, Swansea would have been playing ‘El Relegation’ with Sunderland. He fought tooth and nail to ensure they snatched a point from ‘Draw United’ at the Old Trafford.
Midfielder – Stewart Downing
His pace and ball carrying ability were key to frustrating City all afternoon. And ultimately piled the pressure on Pep Guardiola.
Forward – Sandro Ramirez
If Jorge Sampaoli is not handed the reins at the Camp Nou next season, it might be because the Barça board watched how their former wonderkid – Sandro Ramirez, tore apart and completely annihilated Sevilla. Malaga even had the luxury of missing a penalty and yet ‘no shaking’ for them.
Forward – Robert Lewandowski
And for the 5th consecutive time, Bayern Munich are crowned Bundesliga Champions while Robert Lewandowski matches on as one of the best strikers in the world. Got a brace against hapless Wolfsburg.
Forward – Luis Suarez
Football fans all over the world anticipated when the Barça forward would end his two droughts – biting opposing defence with both feet and the other one he does with his teeth. Well, he ended one drought over the weekend with two superbly taken goals against fellow Catalans -Espanyol. We still don’t know when he’d end the other drought.
