Nigeria National League side Mighty Jets of Jos have sacked 40 players for under-performing. With local rivals Plateau United doing very well in the Nigeria Professional Football League, doing badly in the second tier was unacceptable by the management and the players have been told to find new clubs or maybe new jobs.
Jets’ sporting director, former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu, says the players were simply not delivering: “We had a big squad of 65 players, too crowded and unproductive, so we had to release 40 players,” he said.
“We only need 35 players for the season and some players were not even registered but training with the club. It was just too much.
“What we’ve done is retain the ones who have something to offer and bring in 10 new players as well. It’s like separating wheat from the chaff.
“The atmosphere has changed now and we now have a squad capable of fighting in our tough quest for promotion.”
Jets had high hopes of promotion this season, but instead find themselves in seventh position in the 13-team Northern Conference.
