Pogba, Asensio, Messi and 8 Other Players In Our Team of the Week

Last weekend seemed to be a weekend of emphatic statements. From a boxer giving a ‘big mouthed learner’ boxing lessons, to Liverpool completely annihilating Arsenal at Anfield. Here’s our team of the week (using a 4-3-3 formation).
Goalkeeper – Frazer Forster (Southampton)
Going up against a good Huddersfield Town attack, Forster certainly had his backs against the wall, but he pulled up fine saves to deny the hosts.
Left Back – Jorge (Monaco)
Who needs Mendy when there is Jorge? The young Brazilian kept bombing forward and was a constant torn in Marseille’s flesh throughout the match that ended in a 6-1 rout of Taye Taiwo’s former club.
Centre Back – Charlie Daniels (Bournemouth FC)
The former Leyton Orient’s player scored what already looks like a contender for ‘goal of the season’, and had a monstrous performance against the Citizens. He would have had full value for his score but for a late Raheem Sterling goal.
Centre Back – Phil Jones (Manchester United)
Despite not receiving much help from Daley Blind on the left hand side of defence, he still delivered the goods in fine fashion. News making the rounds is that, some Manchester United fans are going to several mountains to pray that Phil Jones stays fit.
Right Back – Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
We’re sure Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez is currently bedeviled by 2 things – how to get a move away from the Gunners before the transfer window closes and how Joe Gomez ever got the better of him at the Anfield. He showed great pace and strength, and other than one free kick given away in a dangerous area, he was perfect.
Midfielder – Emre Can (Liverpool)
By far, Liverpool’s best player on the day. He motored through the Arsenal midfield like they never even existed, and set up Salah down the left in the build-up to Sturridge’s goal.
Midfielder – Paul Labile Pogba (Manchester United)
The tall and lanky Frenchman left the Leicester City midfield off their rocker for the entirety of the game. He was at the heart of every good thing coming from middle of the park for the Red Devils.
Midfielder – Marco Asensio (Real Madrid)
For large chunks of the game, Asensio was a man on fire, turning everything he touched into goals. In looks and deeds, Marco Asensio seems to be the heir to Ronaldo’s throne.
Forward – Mauro Icardi (Inter Milan)
Like hot knife going through butter, Icardi mesmerizing opposing defenders is no news. He absolutely tore the Roma defense to shreds and the amazing thing about Icardi’s performance was that, he can still get better.
Forward – Paulo Dybala (Juventus)
For all intents and purposes, this seems to be the season of ‘stepping out of shadows’ for several young players. From Neymar to Morata, and now to Dybala (though still in the same club). His first Serie A hat-trick came against Genoa over the weekend as he absolutely stole the show yet again, taking the game to Genoa and dictating the pace and tempo.
Forward – Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
When Barça’s goalscorer, playmaker, dribbler, and assist provider – Lionel Messi, missed a penalty away at Alaves, it looked as if the Argentine needed to appease the gods, but ‘La Pulga Atomica’ made up for it and saved the blushes of Ernesto Valverde by scoring 2 goals.

Barcelona have limited time to sign Dembele

Barcelona have been set a Sunday deadline to sign Ousmane Dembele or find another player in China. With multiple reports claiming Barcelona had agreed to part ways with more than half (€150m) of Neymar’s money for Dembele, Borussia Dortmund came out to say nothing have been finalized yet.

“We have set Barcelona a deadline, and either something will happen or it won’t,’ a spokesman for Dortmund said.

Probably to avoid Spanish tax official and their wahala, Barcelona met with Dortmund on Thursday in Monaco and later confirmed to the Catalan press that talks were smoother than when Romeo met Juliet.

Barcelona have taken a lot of L in the transfer market this season but are confident of landing Dembele, who they could have signed for just €13m last summer.

Arsenal’s presence and three other things from the Champions League draws

UEFA held the Champions League draw yesterday and teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona can now start fighting over who will score the most goals in the group stage. With Farmers football clubs like Maribor, Qarabag and Apoel expected to be glorified tourist, there are sprinkles of high profile games to ditch your bae for. Here are four things from the draws.

Arsenal are still in the Champions League

Arsenal will be participating in the Champions League in an unofficial capacity this season. Though Arsenal fans have started taking language classes to learn Polish and can now say Éropo (which is Europa in Poland, but crowd/overload in Yoruba), the Gunners dominated much of the talk during the Champions League draws.

Social media was filled with all sorts of banter as Arsenal took another Champions League L despite not being in the competition.

We hope Arsene Wenger has been released after he was picked up by security personnel at the Champions League draws yesterday.

SI_20170825_100811

UEFA throw Manchester United and Liverpool a welcome back party

You will be forgiven if you thought Liverpool and Manchester United will be playing in the Europa League again this season because their groups look every bit like it.

Apart from Simi’s voice, there are few things softer than their group containing teams like Benfica, Basel and CSKA Moscow for United while Liverpool play Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor. This is a gift to both clubs from UEFA, unless something crazier than Kanye West happens, both team should qualify easily.

What kind of life did Diego Costa come?

It’s hard to explain who Diego Costa is but it is

even harder to comprehend the things he does. His current club Chelsea were drawn against his God chosen club Atletico Madrid and Costa won’t be a part of the game.

While still checking out bikinis in Brazil while his agent is breaking bottles in London, Costa has found himself nowhere and possibly jobless too.

Who did Tottenham offend?

Whoever cursed Tottenham, did it with no clothes on. They were drawn in a group containing demolition boys Real Madrid, Bayern Munich’s practice team Borrusia Dortmund and free three points merchant Apoel, which is to compensate and ultimately ensure their journey into the Europa League is smoother where they should join up with their brothers, Arsenal.

As if the curse of playing in Wembley in Europe wasn’t enough, UEFA grouped them with teams who usually activate curses.

Arsene Wenger opens up on Jack Wilshere’ situation at Arsenal after fight

Jack Wilshere, last Monday, decided to give everyone the best possible preview of Mayweather vs Connor McGregor highly anticipated fight when Arsenal U23 played Manchester City U23. That fight led many to suggest Jack Wilshere’s career at Arsenal is over and may now be looking to be the next McGregor since his hands are made of a man but his legs of a baby.

Arsene Wenger, who many cnsider as the best defence lawyer in the world has told Jack Wilshere to give himself brain if he plans to continue at Arsenal.

“You know how much I love Jack and his talent but today, in the football world, you need to be a consistent presence. What is at stake for Jack is not his quality, his talent or his determination – it is whether he is a consistent presence at the top. I hope he can manage to do that. Nobody questions his quality.”

“I’m open with Jack,” the manager said. “We have honest conversations. I’m open to what is the best for him. He is at the stage of his career where he needs to play and I can’t guarantee him that today. I think I’m quite open on that.”

In defence of Jack Wilshere for attempting to renovate the face of Man City’s youngster, Arsene Wenger read out a speech that could have freed Lionel Messi of any tax charges.

“At my stage and with my experience in football, I can understand his reaction a lot – especially with what happened to him [with injuries],” Wenger said.

“Ideally, he should not have responded at all but when you have gone through what he has gone through, with bad tackles, it was a human reaction. At the moment, Jack is working very hard to come back after his fracture so, overall, another setback would be terrible – and it was a bad tackle.”

Neymar, Kroos and Butland headlines our team of the week, who else has made it?

The atmosphere was frenetic in some match venues and drab in other venues, but it was still an exciting weekend of football action, even fans that went to welcome Baba still had time to enjoy football. Using a 3-4-3 formation, here’s our team of the week.
Goalkeeper – Jack Butland
Top of Joe Hart’s prayer list right now will be for something ‘mysteriously bad’ to happen to his compatriot – Jack Butland, because with Butland’s blistering performance against Arsenal, Hart can very well kiss the England National Team No. 1 spot ‘Goodbye’.
Central Defender – Eric Bailly
Bailly’s primary aim against Swansea City was to prevent United from shipping-in goals. The Ivorian not only did that effectively, he also had the luxury of recording his first goal for the Red Devils. Good job Bailly.
Central Defender – Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire couldn’t really have had a more difficult start to his Leicester City career than conceding four goals in the defeat at Arsenal, but he made up for it by getting his first goal for the club and ultimately ensuring that they kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Brighton.
Defender – Marc Bartra
We don’t know which caught our eye more – seeing the Spaniard score an unusual goal or him dedicating the goal to the victims of the Barcelona attack. Whichever it was was more than enough reason to get him in our coveted team of the week.
Midfielder – Marcos Alonso
The question on the lips of many Chelsea fans lips is – “Who needs Alex Sandro, when we have Marcos Alonso?”. The Spaniard not only scored a stunning free kick against Tottenham but also went on to net Chelsea’s late winner at Wembley to secure a much-needed three points for his side and get his team kicking.
Midfielder – Aaron Mooy
Wondering why Huddersfield Town are currently seated 2nd on the English Premier League table? Look no further, this Australaian is one of the reasons. His brilliance and industry, downed Newcastle, and handed Huddersfield Town their second victory in as many games.
Midfielder – Toni Kroos
Like Modric, the German put in another midfield dominating display. He picked his passes with ease and his late runs into the box were always a threat. Got a deserved goal later on in the game.
Midfielder – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
He stretched City’s defence and caused no end of trouble. Great work and cross for Wayne Rooney’s goal. The young England starlet was by a mile Everton’s best player at the Etihad Stadium.
Forward – Neymar
Back to back appearances in our Team of the Week and the Brazilian doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon. Neymar scored two, assisted another two at the Parc des Princes in a 6-2 win over Toulouse and still had more than enough time to throw shades at Barcelona’s directors.
Forward – Sadio Mane
Philippe Coutinho might be Liverpool’s Poster-boy, but Mane is arguably Liverpool’s most effective player. He has been the standout player in an average side so far this season, and against Watford on Saturday, was no different.
Forward – Mauro Icardi
He missed more than 4 weeks of pre-season, and then on the first weekend of the season he scores two goals inside 15 minutes. That’s Mauro Icardi for you, ‘Unpredictable’ is an understatement.

Martial tips Pogba for Ballon d’Or

Manchester United winger Anthony Martial says Paul Pogba will win the Ballon d’Or in the next five years. Pogba was the world’s most expensive player until Neymar joined Paris St Germain from Barcelona in a world record £198million transfer earlier this month. Martial believes his compatriot has all it takes to become the best footballer in the world, just that dancing skills and colourful hairstyles are not part of the criteria for winning the award.

‘I would say he is probably the best midfield player in the world,’ United winger Martial says.

‘Paul is very mentally strong and he is very sure of himself.

‘He is a big guy, he is very technical on the ball and he has lots of endurance. He is still young, too, so he has a lot to work on and he can get even better.

‘If he continues to play and improve like he is doing then I think he is also going to win the Ballon d’Or award in the next five years.’

But Pogba has impressed at the start of the new campaign with two goals from two appearances as United have set the early Premier League pace.

Lyon president decries Mbappe’s imminent move to PSG

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is not happy with Kylian Mbappe’s imminent move to PSG. He says the transfer will ruin competition in Ligue 1. With the world record signing of Neymar Jr from Barcelona and the possible signing of Mbappe, other Ligue 1 clubs will only have to jostle for second place.

“We’re talking about the possible arrival of Kylian Mbappe,” Aulas said. “When you see Sunday’s game, is it useful for Mbappe to come to PSG? Is it useful for the competition and the economic evolution of football?

“If you no longer have balance in terms of the investors, in the long term, you risk no longer having the incredible football we saw with PSG. I’m afraid we’re heading into an arms race, which is pointless.

“It is going to improve PSG’s performance if Kylian Mbappe comes? If you hoard, with supernatural money, the best players in one team, you don’t have any more competition.”

Mbappe, 18, helped Monaco to the Ligue 1 title last season, ending PSG’s four-year reign as league champions in the process.

Rooney: The red half of Manchester will enjoy my goal

Everton forward Wayne Rooney says scoring his 200th Premier League goal which he scored against Manchester City was a sweet moment, which Manchester United fans must have enjoyed. ‘Agent’ Rooney scored his second league goal of the season to help Everton pick a point against Manchester City, and must have made Manchester United fans happy.

‘It was a sweet moment. I’m sure the red half of Manchester will enjoy that as well.” Rooney said.

‘Before the game, a point would have been good, but we are a bit frustrated. We felt we could see game out, maybe get another goal but give City credit, they changed positions and made it difficult for us with some big chances.’

Raheem Sterling’s late equaliser denied Everton victory after Rooney became the second player after Alan Shearer to hit a double century in the Premier League.

Ramos tries to explain the reason for his incredible red card record

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has blamed La Liga referees for his red card record, saying the La Liga referees need to learn more from English football. The Spanish international says the English referees are more tolerant, (they could turn a blind eye and happily watch him dismember opponents legs) after he was sent off in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna.

‘In some areas we need to look more at English football and let the players play on more, I like their system better. In Europe referees are more tolerant,’ Ramos, who received the 23rd red card of his Real Madrid career, told reporters.

‘I don’t agree with the (second) yellow card, it was harsh, but I respect the opinion of the referee. I have no intention of hurting him, I just supported myself, but you learn from everything.’

Explaining the first incident with Schar, which occurred when Deportivo’s Zakaria Bakkali player was injured on the floor, Ramos added: ‘We didn’t kick the ball out because they didn’t do it (earlier in the game).
‘They ran after me, Schar headbutted me and all I did was push him out the way without trying to hurt him.’

Ramos is Real’s most sent off player, having been sent-off 23 times, with former defender Fernando Hierro trailing way behind on 12 red cards.

Wembley atmosphere great for opponents – Conte tells Tottenham

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte says the Wembley stadium where Tottenham Hotspur will play their home matches this season has a fantastic atmosphere that is great for Tottenham’s opponents. Going by Conte words, all Premier League teams have 18 away matches and an additional match at a neutral venue this season.

‘Wembley is a fantastic stadium, to feel this atmosphere is amazing,’ said the Italian. ‘But to have this atmosphere is also great for the opponents.’

Conte also praised the performance of his team after an impressive 2-1 win against Spurs.

‘I saw fighters today. For sure, I saw a lot of positive things in a moment that was not easy for us with the suspensions and the injuries.
‘Don’t forget, Eden Hazard stays out. Despite this, to play against Tottenham away and to win is a fantastic result.
‘We suffered during the game, but that’s normal. I think that we showed we were always dangerous in every moment.
‘Don’t forget last season, after 13 wins in a row, we lost 2-0 at Tottenham. Instead, today, I saw a lot of positives. We played with four new players from last season.
‘In defence we replaced David Luiz and Gary Cahill with a young player in Andreas Christensen, and Antonio Rudiger with a second appearance. But we showed great desire to stay compact, not lose the balance.

Spurs have lost eight of their last 10 games at Wembley.

Arsenal duo set to join Birmingham

Arsenal full-backs Carl Jenkinson and Cohen Brammall are set to join Birmingham City on loan. The Championship club is coached by Harry Redknapp and are also close to signing Sam Gallagher on loan from Southampton.

Arsenal duo Jenkinson and Bramall are unlikely to play much under Arsene Wenger this season and have opted to join the Championship club.

Wenger also recently spoke about the need to reduce the size of his squad: ‘We have too many players. It is not manageable,’ he said.

So the Frenchman will be pleased to have slimmed down his numbers, just that some Arsenal fans will hope the likes of Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and even Wenger will move on loan to Championship clubs too.

Neymar blasts Barcelona directors

World most expensive player Neymar Jr. has criticized Barcelona directors, saying they should not be there. He said Barca will not be competitive on the European stage unless changes are made at the top, and said the current situation makes him sad. With this, the Brazilian confirms he was not happy at Barcelona, just that there is no name like Nelson Semedo among Barcelona directors.

‘When I arrived, everything started well, but at Barcelona, there are directors that shouldn’t be there. I’m very sad with them.’ he said.
‘I had four very happy years there, but Barca deserve much better. I have a lot of friends there. I hope things get better for Barca and that they go back to being a team that can compete.’

The Brazilian left the Nou Camp in a shock £198million move earlier this month, he has made a stellar start to life in Paris, scoring twice as they thrashed Toulouse 6-2 to stay top of Ligue 1.

Matic: Manchester United is a bigger club than Chelsea

Despite winning the Premier league with Chelsea twice, Nemanja Matic says Manchester United are the biggest club he has played for. While he admits that Chelsea are also a big club, he believes dumping the Blues for the Red Devils is like leaving Okokomaiko for Lekki.

When asked if United are the biggest club he’s played for, Matic said: ‘Definitely, everyone knows what Manchester United is about.

‘When you say Manchester United, it is different. Also Chelsea is a big club, Benfica are the biggest club in Portugal. But Manchester is Manchester.

‘When I came here for the first day, I could feel that the people at the club help you every day if you need something and supporters are very important for this club.

‘After every training session, they are waiting for us outside the training ground to take pictures, to give a signature so I think the club is one of the biggest in the world.

‘Maybe you have two or three clubs similar to United, but Manchester is one of the biggest clubs in the world for sure.’

Matic started in United’s opening game of the season as they defeated West Ham 4-0 at the Old Trafford.

Jardim says Monaco are protecting Mbappe by keeping him out of the team

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim says the club is not punishing Kylian Mbappe by leaving him out of the team but they are protecting him. The teenage sensation is a subject of transfer with the likes of PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid linked, he is reported to have told Monaco he wants to join PSG, where the grass is greener.

“We’ve never been in the habit of punishing our players,” he told reporters. “It’s not the right word. It’s rather to protect him. With all these things around an 18-year-old kid, it’s our responsibility to protect him from the storm. It’s a decision of the club.

“That means me, Vadim [Vasilyev, Monaco vice-president] and the sporting director [Antonio Cordon]. It’s our decision for the player, the squad, the club.

“I’m always for protecting players who need it. My philosophy is to play with the available players who are at 100 percent. Kylian is not 100 percent, he’s not in form right now. It’s normal. If another paper offers you 15 times your salary, you’ll type less well on your computer…”

After featuring in the champions’ first Ligue 1 game of the season, the 18-year-old was an unused substitute in last weekend’s victory over Dijon, and is expected to start on the bench again when Monaco go to Metz on Friday.

Why would a player want to leave Liverpool?- Klopp directs question to Coutinho

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he does not see a reason why a player will want to leave Liverpool, stressing that there is a good project going on that he expects the players to want to  be part of. This is amidst report that Phillipe Coutinho is on his way to join La Liga giants Barca to help fill the void left by Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal. Helping Klopp with an answer, making more money and winning titles may be why a player would want to leave Liverpool, Luis Suarez knows.

“Can you imagine for a minute I am not a little bit interested about the problems or not of Barcelona?” Klopp said.
“I will never talk about something I spoke about with a player. But you can imagine, in general, I think for each player Liverpool is a very good club, a very good team in the moment.

“We have a good age of the group. We have very young boys, experience – it’s a good mix and we are on our way.
“I think we got rid of the expectations of 20 years ago and created our own expectations for all the people. They expect a lot from us because of what we did last season.

“I am fine with the situation and I am very positive about the project of Liverpool. I don’t see a lot of reasons for each player to leave the club at the moment and that’s just in general.”

On Wednesday, Barca general manager Pep Segura claimed the club were closing in on Coutinho.

English club hints at move for Musa

One-time Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa may be on his way to join Championship side – Hull City on loan. Hull City coach Leonid Slutsky is upbeat of a better working relationship with Musa having previously worked together at CSKA Moscow for four years. Musa has struggled for playing time at Leicester City, the Championship may be a good place to put his endless running like a headless chicken to good use.

“We have some loan options and maybe at the end of the transfer window getting players from the Premier League is possible,” Slutsky said.
“We are waiting for the decision of big clubs on some players.
“He is not our player but, of course, every coach is better working with players he knows and I worked with Musa for four years. I know him and he knows me, it is normal.

The 24-year-old joined the Leicester City last summer from CSKA Moscow for a fee of €19.5m, scored twice in 21 league games last season.
