Brighton comes from a convincing performance at home against Reading 3:0 last Saturday evening, as the team simply did what was needed and didn’t lose energy trying to do more. They were more effective than the opponent and created more chances, but ball possession went to the other side since the players of Brighton looked more satisfied with the result for the most of the game.
Baldock opened the scoreline in 35th minute, while the hosts scored twice more in the second halftime, via Murphy in 56th and Knockaert in 80th minute. It was fifth consecutive match without defeat for Brighton, as the team now stands first at the table having a point more than tonight’s opponent Newcastle and probably more important, six points more than third placed Huddersfield.
Home team is set to play in 4-4-2 formation, using Murray and Baldock as forwards. Left back Sebastien Pocognoli (14/0) is doubtful for this one and his participation will be decided before the game. Injured are left back Gaetan Bong (21/0) and right back Liam Rosenior (4/0) as he is at the recovery stage but the match comes too soon for him.
Newcastle, on the other side, suffered a setback last time out last Saturday, as the team took only a point in a home draw match against Bristol City 2:2. They paid the price of entering the match in a bad manner, since the guests took the double lead quickly, via goals from Wilbraham and Cotterill, while it wasn’t easy for the hosts to get back into the game just like that.
They were better for the rest of the match, had much more of the ball possession and chances created, but could only take a point thanks to an own goal in 59th and a goal from Clark eight minutes before the final whistle. This way Newcastle remained undefeated for last six matches in Championship (three victories and three draws), but slipped down the table to second place and now have five points more than third and play-off placed Huddersfield.
Visitors will be playing in 4-2-3-1 formation most likely, using Mitrovic as central striker, while Ritchie, Diame and Gouffran are expected to be employed as offensive midfielders. Midfielders Rolando Aarons (4/0) and Isaac Hayden (27/1) are injured, while striker Dwight Gayle (24/20) is doubtful and probably won’t be risked for entire clash.
- Newcastle are undefeated in their last 8 matches (Championship).
Big game between the sides that are not only aiming to promote, but also aiming the title in Championship. The game itself surely isn’t easy to be predicted this time, but somehow I believe that experience of Newcastle’s players might be playing much more important role in this one. Brighton can’t be underestimated, but this time the odds are giving some value with the away side.
