Last weekend seemed to be a weekend of emphatic statements. From a boxer giving a ‘big mouthed learner’ boxing lessons, to Liverpool completely annihilating Arsenal at Anfield. Here’s our team of the week (using a 4-3-3 formation).
Goalkeeper – Frazer Forster (Southampton)
Going up against a good Huddersfield Town attack, Forster certainly had his backs against the wall, but he pulled up fine saves to deny the hosts.
Left Back – Jorge (Monaco)
Who needs Mendy when there is Jorge? The young Brazilian kept bombing forward and was a constant torn in Marseille’s flesh throughout the match that ended in a 6-1 rout of Taye Taiwo’s former club.
Centre Back – Charlie Daniels (Bournemouth FC)
The former Leyton Orient’s player scored what already looks like a contender for ‘goal of the season’, and had a monstrous performance against the Citizens. He would have had full value for his score but for a late Raheem Sterling goal.
Centre Back – Phil Jones (Manchester United)
Despite not receiving much help from Daley Blind on the left hand side of defence, he still delivered the goods in fine fashion. News making the rounds is that, some Manchester United fans are going to several mountains to pray that Phil Jones stays fit.
Right Back – Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
We’re sure Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez is currently bedeviled by 2 things – how to get a move away from the Gunners before the transfer window closes and how Joe Gomez ever got the better of him at the Anfield. He showed great pace and strength, and other than one free kick given away in a dangerous area, he was perfect.
Midfielder – Emre Can (Liverpool)
By far, Liverpool’s best player on the day. He motored through the Arsenal midfield like they never even existed, and set up Salah down the left in the build-up to Sturridge’s goal.
Midfielder – Paul Labile Pogba (Manchester United)
The tall and lanky Frenchman left the Leicester City midfield off their rocker for the entirety of the game. He was at the heart of every good thing coming from middle of the park for the Red Devils.
Midfielder – Marco Asensio (Real Madrid)
For large chunks of the game, Asensio was a man on fire, turning everything he touched into goals. In looks and deeds, Marco Asensio seems to be the heir to Ronaldo’s throne.
Forward – Mauro Icardi (Inter Milan)
Like hot knife going through butter, Icardi mesmerizing opposing defenders is no news. He absolutely tore the Roma defense to shreds and the amazing thing about Icardi’s performance was that, he can still get better.
Forward – Paulo Dybala (Juventus)
For all intents and purposes, this seems to be the season of ‘stepping out of shadows’ for several young players. From Neymar to Morata, and now to Dybala (though still in the same club). His first Serie A hat-trick came against Genoa over the weekend as he absolutely stole the show yet again, taking the game to Genoa and dictating the pace and tempo.
Forward – Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
When Barça’s goalscorer, playmaker, dribbler, and assist provider – Lionel Messi, missed a penalty away at Alaves, it looked as if the Argentine needed to appease the gods, but ‘La Pulga Atomica’ made up for it and saved the blushes of Ernesto Valverde by scoring 2 goals.
