Antonio Conte says Chelsea Spanish forward Pedro Rodriguez injury suffered against Arsenal on Saturday was worse than he thought. He confirmed Pedro suffered ‘multiple fractures’ around his eye socket and cheekbone in his collision with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina. Pedro took the full force of a punch from Ospina in the face during a friendly in Beijing, as the Arsenal goalie showed evidence that Jens Lehmann is the new goalkeeping coach at the Emirates.
‘The situation was more serious,’ said the Chelsea manager. ‘I hoped it would be only concussion but he has multiple fractures.
‘I think with a mask in 10 days he could come back to work with us.’
Pedro’s return to London was delayed as he stayed in China for further observation before the medics were prepared to let him fly.
Conte refused to blame Arsenal keeper Ospina for the injury.
‘I was a player,’ he said. ‘I know it was an accident. It can happen, Ospina tried to take the ball.’
Pedro’s injury blow means he is unlikely to be ready for the FA Charity Shield.
